In Germany, butterflies were once considered ill omens. On Saint Peter's day, February 22nd, children would knock on the houses with hammers and recite rhymes to drive the butterflies out. If they failed, misfortune would surely follow, such as outbreaks of cattle disease. The superstition has some truth in it as butterflies can spread disease via contact with the eye fluids of cattle.
