This piece evolved from sound hunting around Lake Buttermere and Crummock Water in the Lake District.

A sonic topography of live manipulation of elemental objects from the landscape and its industries, field recordings, memories and found stories. The performance was recorded at NoizeMaschin! #15 at the Amersham Arms, New Cross, London.

Hir means ‘long’ in an old language, part of the word ‘menhir’, meaning ‘long stone’. Sounding the word also invites us to hear and be here.

This piece feels its way through a long time, a longing and an old listening, and onwards into an uncertain future and the strange hope of a visitation, through field recordings, voice, text and film captured...

Originally commissioned for broadcast on the deep sea 'Radio Amnion' sound project, the piece is written for and performed on the bespoke, one-of-a-kind Orbit instrument, designed and made by Stephen and Hannah in collaboration with master luthier Kai Tönjes.
