The Smurfs were initially conceived and published as a group of comic book characters in 1958 by Belgian cartoonist Peyo (also known as Pierre Culliford). There are over 100 Smurf characters, and each one's name is based on an adjective that highlights a particular trait. They are a mythical community of little, blue, humanoid beings that reside in mushroom-shaped homes.
